Tønder Festival 2014

Donnerstag/Thursday

As I arrived in the afternoon, had to find a good place for my tent and t organize my camp site life, my first day began in the evening with the Oysterband on the big stage, for the first time without Chopper on Cello, but thev found a very good successor.

On the P 4 Scenen we had Madison Violet, Brenley MacEachern and Lisa MacIsaac, and on the stage of Tent 2 were Basco and Habadekuk and gave a first impression of what Danisch folk could mean.

On Sunday morning another highlight of the Danish folk music scene was on stage in Telt 1, the folkBALTICA Ensemble, one o the international youth folk music projects the Tønder Festival has often fostered. 40 young music talents from Schleswig-Holstein and southern Denmark. They were followed by Dreamers Circus, playing Scandinavian folk music played with a touch of classical tunes. The traditional program for Sunday afternoon ist the Songwriters Circle, this year with Madison Violet, Chuck Brodsky, Hudson Taylor, Sarah Lee Guthrie ans Jonny Irion, John Fulbright, Alan Doyle, Hayes Carll, Bruce Guthro, Brian McNeill and Lukas Grahem.

And in the PALACE DES GLACES a crazy, funny and brilliant Band: Lotus, Sheesham and Son. Another tradition ist the gala concert on Sunday evening, this year with Martha Gainwright and the Chieftains. The final party took place in the PALACE DES GLACES with LeVent du Nord.

Freitag/Friday

Friday Afternoon saw a young band with musicians from Canada, Scotland and Ireland: The Outside Track, an exciting group, which has been awarded the "Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik’ for Folk Music" n 2013. In the afternoon the first concerts of the Folk Spot, with Himmerland, Basco and Habadekuk, took place, where the different approaches to Danish Folk Music could be heard.

Hudson Taylor, the brothers Harry and Alfie Hudson-Taylor from Dublin, are the fisrt band to be booked three years in a row. And they really deserved it. Only few bands I know, who are able to get across a big bunch of energy and goog mood in that way. And the big final of the evening appeared with the phantastic Eileen Ivers and her band. She is a paragon of energy and she really set fire to the audience.

Montag/Monday

On Monday most of the visitors have left the festival, the camping site is nearly empty, workers begin to dismantle tents and stages. But in the evening stands the legendary Volunteers Party. With the Volunteers Party the festival organisators and the musicians express their thanks to the volunteers, who do such a great job, without them this Festival could not take place. The Volunteers party is not conceivable without the legendary Curry and this Curry would not be possible without the Curry Crew. This special kind of volunteers begins to cook a meal in the morning for about thousand people in the tradition of Hamish Imlach.

Carsten Panduro held his last speech at the festival and was honoured by standing ovations from volunteers, officials and musicians. But it would not be the volunteers party, without the party going on with a row of many brilliant musicians playing another great concert for the volunteers
